Greetings,

Below is a copy of a letter I sent to the folks at Pandora Radio, who , unfortunately, are about to lose their CEO, and have no replacement in sight. Now that I have discovered their "/everywhere/auto"  aftermarket page, it seems as if i no longer have any reason to exist and pursue a strategy of getting "the internet" into "the car".  Apparently, some people can read a publicly disclosed business plan and execution plan, and then build a business based upon it.

In any case, I've decided to stop my on line "experimentation" with all of these other music services on line, and to just listen to what I like, when i  like in the comfort of my own home. If youve read my profiles on Facebook and Car and Driver and elsewhere you might think that te content you have seen me produce accurately reflect my public description of myself.  And you would be right.  The original plan for ICV was (partially) to "bridge the cultural gap" between the OEMs and their consumers.  If that's not yet done, it never will be.  I for one, and just tired of pretending to be somebody that I am not.

Re: Radio Motorious (* music is supposed to be heard, not seen *)

To whom it may concern,

I had some detailed (very detailed) questions about the music genome project, and specifically the exact nature of the algoritms used in creating "profiles" or to "suggest" new music for the listener. I have been working on a "new media" project for over 12 years now, which may or may not be of interest to your organization. I do not have a degree in music, however I do have a lot of eduction and formal training in music. My educational background is in Biomedical Engineering, or engineering products or processes that interface (or interconnect) MAN and MACHINE....

According to the information on your web site:

Each song in the Music Genome Project is analyzed using up to 450 distinct musical characteristics by a trained music analyst. These attributes capture not only the musical identity of a song, but also the many significant qualities that are relevant to understanding the musical preferences of listeners. The typical music analyst working on the Music Genome Project has a four-year degree in music theory, composition or performance, has passed through a selective screening process and has completed intensive training in the Music Genome's rigorous and precise methodology. To qualify for the work, analysts must have a firm grounding in music theory, including familiarity with a wide range of styles and sounds.

The Music Genome Project's database is built using a methodology that includes the use of precisely defined terminology, a consistent frame of reference, redundant analysis, and ongoing quality control to ensure that data integrity remains reliably high. Pandora does not use machine-listening or other forms of automated data extraction.

The Music Genome Project is updated on a continual basis with the latest releases, emerging artists, and an ever-deepening collection of catalogue titles.

That's all well and good. I don't listen to music al that often, and have just opened my "real" account: http://www.pandora.com/station/play/1317866924311041407It is from HERE that one can build an accurate profile about my "musical tastes". Since I don't buy new music and I don't listen to the radio, what I like is probably never going to change. THe "cookies" which all of these web sites have been collecting from the cache of my laptop are nothing other than a wild goose chase.

About Me:

1. i have perfect pitch
2 i am a classically trained pianist (i do not play jazz, pop, rock or any other form of music on the piano).
3. i began piano at age 7 and was (one of) the most decorated and awarded competitors at recitals.
4. composers i have performed range from beethoven, j.s. bach, c.p.e. bach, mozart, mendehlsson, grieg, tchaikovsky, .... (it's quit a long list). i was careful to document most of them, by going to wikipedia, looking them up, and then emailing information about them to a "spam" list I kept. i made sure that I didn't include a composer unless I had actually become proficient at playing at least one of his works. i am not sure if i would call beethoven my favorite composer or the one who i was most proficient at playing, including all of his sonatas, piano concertos...(i'll try and keep this brief)
5. i learned jazz and concert (alto) saxophone as an adolescent. was moderately proficient. Take 5 is probably my favorite piece to play. i briefly played soprano saxophone.
6 i would call myself a competent vocalist. i performed in numerous musicals in junior high and high school, as well as solo in random concerts. The last time i performed in front of an audience was sophomore year in college.
7. I attended Harvard college, where my concentration was in engineering sciences, though for several years, I attempted to a double "major" concentration of music and engineering. Unfortunately, the syllabus was such that it was impossible to execute because there we so many conflicting classes. So after taking several classes in classical music theory and history as well as jazz history, I graduated with a degree in Engineering alone.
8. I was raised listening primarily to classical music and country music. My father's favorite music growing up was country. I don't think I missed the Grand Ole Opry once (while it still existed).
9. I don't like rap music. I don't like music which is "sampled" from other music, particularly when it is done with the express purpose of circumventing the rights of the author/owner of the musc being sampled. The classic example is the group Parliament "P Funk", who was robbed of a lot of their intellectual property and never compensated (paid royalties) from the sales of the derivative compositions.
10. I'm not a 13 year old girl or boy ("the mtv demographic"), and I don't care for "music television" in all of its forms, or music videos in general. Usually, I can tell if like a piece of music the first time i hear it, and if I don't, I'd like to delete it, and never hear it again. (that's not really possible with "radio", which is why i haven't listened to the radio in almost 20 years.
11. NOISE POLLUTION LAWS (seem to exist in more civilized societies). If you're in your car listening to your music, please see it that your music doesn't leave the confine of your car to bother and harass the rest of us. I know, it's a lot to ask. I found it was much worse in my previous neighborhood, where people would use their cars as boom boxes, blasting obnoxious music into the streets at ridiculous hours. On three separate occasions, I have opened a Pandora account and started a "radio station" based upon a singe sng, or artist, in order to observe the progression of what it would suggest. Assuming one is just starting, he only piece of information the system has about you is that ONE SONG. Upon what does it base it's first recommendation? Enough about me. I wrote exactly the same thing and sent out "spam mail" before beginning this exercise, where i would be both the SUBJECT and the CONTROL, for the purposes of data analysis (just not contemporaneously).
12. And though I had bought a Sony Playstation and several games in the early 1990s, I did not once use it, and have not played a video game since i was in high school.
13. I do not like television. From 1992 to 2002: while married, while living with Jeffrey King on E25th Street and while living with Philip Munger, I didn't once watch. I don't expect to, nor to have any desire to, see or speak to either of them for the remainder of my natural life and I don't need nor expect them to verify my claim. And though i didn't once watch television (unless it was completely unavoidable) because I spent my time working and doing anything else i could which was productive. Perhaps it is because while growing up, I was not allowed to watch television unless it was educational and when the neighborhood upgraded to cable, my family did not.
14. i just opened up my "real" account: a Gregorian Chant channel, and will listen to those genres or songs I enjoy listening to, or am in the mood to listen to. Gregorian chant, baroque, pre-classical, classical, country (particularly blue grass banjo), various forms of rock/alternative rock.
15. Finally, i should add that before 1997, when I founded my company, i had never once surfed the internet or the world wide web, and until it's failure in 2001, had never used a computer to access a web site All of the research I perform was dug up by consultants I had hired, and I would direct them to email me information or documents they prepared. My email box was almost entirely ONE WAY, with the vary rare return of information to 2003. I had a 256 bit encrypted PGP lock/key system with my former creditor, Philip Munger. Never once, was there a "cookie" or piece of "malware" deposited into my computer because it ever accessed the internet. i had never once made a purchase over the internet, I have, until this day, never bought or owned any pornography.   Definitionally, that makes me a TECHNOPHOBE.  I couldn't be further away from the "target audience" I was pretending to be.

I bore easily, so I've moved on to other things to keep me occupied.  I joined this web site: www.physorg.com/profile/user/Dino_llc , after researching some of the work Nissan has been "vocal" about pursuing, and being led to that page. I am still waiting to hear back from the folks at pandora.

Cheers,
Dino, llc
