Dubbed the 'queen' of its market segment by the press at that time, the Lexus GS 300 (known in Japan as the Toyota Aristo) was another exercise on the deluxe saloon theme.

The car is often believed to hark back to the Jaguar Kensington prototype of 1990, but in fact the first drawings of the GS 300 date from 1988.

The GS 300 was an attempt to add a touch of judicious European balance to top of the range saloons within the Japanese market, that had for all too long been overburdened with redundant and superfluous features.

The ex-chairman of Brilliance China Automotive (BCA) group has fled to the US and says he fears for his safety, the Financial Times reported. Yang Rong has reportedly said he was "persecuted" and threatened with house arrest by the government of the north-eastern rustbelt province of Liaoning in dispute over ownership of the carmaker.

BCA, which has a manufacturing tie-up with British car firm MG Rover, became the first Chinese firm to list its shares abroad when it floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 1992.
Mr Yang said he had written to China's president and prime minister to protest about his treatment, the FT reported, citing an interview the businessman gave to the Hong Kong Chinese language magazine Asia Week.

BMW, Toyota links

"I am not a party member, nor a government official, yet they launched this battle against me," Mr Yang said.

As well as the tie-up with MG Rover, BCA has a joint venture with German luxury car maker BMW and license agreements with Toyota of Japan.

The firm blossomed in the early days of Chinese economic reform by making luxury minibuses, ideal vehicles for ferrying delegations of government and party officials on visits to new projects.

Mr Yang said he had filed a lawsuit in a Beijing court, though no other details of the case were given.

Mr Yang's statement confirms reports of an investigation into the finances of BCA's former chairman and of the company he helped to found, the FT said.
BCA has previously denied that any investigation was taking place.

Ownership or theft?

But Mr Yang said the authorities in Liaoning had accused him of stealing 500m yuan ($60.4m; £38.5m) of state assets.

Provincial leaders have considerable power in the Chinese political system and are held accountable for economic growth targets.

Analysts believe the origin of the dispute lies in the ownership structure created for BCA ahead of its New York flotation.

Earlier this year, the central government ordered a restructuring which shifted state ownership from national to local level.

Liaoning province has taken over BCA's majority shareholder, an educational trust owned by China's central bank.

The trust was set up and financed by Mr Yang, who then passed ownership to the People's Bank of China to give credibility to the stock market debut.

As ordered, the Bank has handed it stake in BCA to Liaoning province.
Mr Yang says the province now wants to take over all BCA's assets, not just state assets.
If the provincial authorities were to pursue corruption charges against Mr Yang, the consequences could be serious.

Some high profile officials have received the death penalty for corruption.
Mr Yang has reportedly said he was willing to place his remaining BCA assets in a trust as long as he received some recognition.
